We have started our Kamishibai study in 2nd grade. Kamishibai is a form of Japanese storytelling that translates to “paper theater”. We always start by reading, The Kamishibai Man by Allen Say. The children love the story of the old man riding his bicycle into the city and telling stories and selling candy. They were so excited to see a real Kamishibai stage the following week. They have heard: The Three Magic Charms (my favorite), The Peach Boy, and Little One Inch.

It is an interesting experience for the children because the text is out of sight. They have to completely listen and rely on the images presented to understand the story. I believe that second grade is a perfect time for these folktales and form of storytelling.
